2011 Highlights

2011 Highlights

Last year was a busy year for your Association. Here are some of the highlights:

ISPC participated in 5 Industry conferences, including:

1.American Public Power E&O Conference – Nashville, TN

2.SWEDE Conference – Bastrop, TX

3.Southeast Electric Exchange (SEE) – Orlando, FL

4.CARILEC Engineer’s Conference – Curacao

5.Incident-Prevention Conf. & Tradeshow – Louisville, KY

ISPC was selected by two more Technical and Community Colleges in 2011to assist with developing program curricula and material for new Lineman Training Programs (a total of 20 schools around the nation currently use ISPC and T&D PowerSkills):

1.I-Green Learning Center, Newton, Iowa

2.Indiana Vocational Technical College (IVY Tech) Evansville Campus

ISPC created two new Training Manuals: Pad Mounted Transformers Safety Procedures, a comprehensive work covering all the critical safety aspects of URD pad mounted transformers and switchgear, and Pole Top and Bucket Truck Rescue, a combined unit of the most frequently taught compliance rescue units.  Both products consist of a DVD/video, Instructor’s Guide and a Student Workbook.  Members receive discounts on both products. ISPC continued to participate on the Board of the newly formed Utility Safety and Operations Leadership Network (USOLN) and continues to help develop and update the Review Course for the new Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) certification test. Executive Director Schenk chairs the Committee on Recertification, as well. Schenk also teaches the CUSP Review Course, under contract with USOLN.

Significant progress was made in the Association’s effort to help CARILEC (the Caribbean Association of Electric Utilities) implement the new Lineworker training throughout the Caribbean and establish a Certified Training Program for all CARILEC Member-States. CARILEC acquired the T&D PowerSkills package and then contracted with ISPC to customize aspects of the material for unique electric systems features found throughout the Caribbean. CARILEC has also contracted with ISPC to provide Train-the-Trainer classes for Member Utilities and provide lineworker evaluation services for member utilities.

ISPC conducted several Consulting Projects during the year, including Contractor Safety Audits, Safety Manual Development, Instructor-led classes for client Lineworkers and over 200 lineworker evaluations for clients.  Tim Self, CUSP, joined the Association, as Director of Operations, in April.

Executive Director Schenk published a series of articles on Supervisory Development for Crew Foremen in Incident-Prevention Magazine in 2011. Schenk also made safety and training presentations in several Industry events, conferences and tradeshows.

The Institute for Safety in Powerline Construction added 9 new members in 2011.
